It's a boy y'all!!!

Man, I never thought being this tired would feel so rewarding.

Marshall James Rhodes, born Sunday morning at about 2:01 a.m. He weighed in at 7 pounds, 15 ounces, significantly less than the doctors had expected.

He was a stubborn cuss, too. Labor lasted about 14 hours or so.  My wife was fully dilated before doctors decided that the little guy was not going to drop in to the ‘birth zone’. So, Marshall was born via c-section (there’s nothing wrong with jumping out the ol’ window!).

I just got finished doing the parenting 2.0 thing of Googling your baby’s name, and came up with some alt-country band from San Francisco. Auntie Jackie in San Fran promised to grab us a couple of their shirts the next time they play. Other than that, seems like Mr. Marshall is the only sheriff in town…

…well the web, anyway.

Barry's 756th finally lands in Cooperstown → sportsillustrated.cnn.com

So Barry Bonds finally gets his record-setting 756th home run ball in the Baseball Hall of Fame today, despite some lame asterisk being painted onto the ball.

Apparently, the hypocrite who got mad money for the ball thought he’d be more ‘respectable’ to the public eye by paining the asterisk on the ball; that’s right, Cooperstown didn’t do it, HE did it.

Why is this pathetic?  Well, first of all, unlike most hypocritical ‘fans’ of baseball who have already pegged Bonds as the villain of the diamond, the HOF does not make judgements on people based on accusations.  Once the trial is over for purgery, we’ll see what happens to the ball.

Why does this make me sick?  Simple.  Baseball is not the sport it once was.  No, I’m not complaining about it, and neither are most fans.  Why?  Because it’s a great game to watch.  Going to the park with friends and family has to be one of the best things in life for me.  Moving from San Francisco to Portland was an easy decision for me (cost of living, you know?) save for one thing—NO MORE GIANTS GAMES (I tear up just thinking about it).  I loved heading to the game and just being a part of the crowd.  It’s truly a grand spectator sport.

So, back to the ‘hypocrite’ remark.  You see, baseball sort of has this ‘black mark’ on it that not everyone seems to agree on.  From the mid-Nineties, all the way through probably 2002-2003, baseball experienced what many consider to be the ‘steroid era’.  This is more-or-less why you see so many accusations of steroid use in players today—mainly due to what they were or were not doing during that ‘era’.  Now, some of you might be thinking, “Well, no one knew what the players were taking HGH or steroids during that time.  It’s only come to the surface now.”  Do you really believe that?  Do you honestly think that Selig had no clue?  No.  We could’ve easily seen players like Tejada, Bonds, McGwire, Clemens, Sosa, etc. in court in the late Nineties and in 2002 for the same reason we see them in the public eye as of late.  What we have now is an organization that is trying to cover its collecitve ass, and throw as many players under the bus as they can.

Enter Bonds.  The villain of baseball.  Now that the press is finally become ‘aware’ of the steroid and HGH ‘problem’, they feel it’s time for them to pretend it’s all surprising news to them.  Now, finally, is their chance to crucify the one guy they’ve hated for so long.  Barry, who has been somewhat standoffish for so long at times to the press.  Why?  Well, because of what we see now.  I honestly think he saw it coming.  Once you peg a guy as a jerk in the press, you tend to treat him as such.  Then, you become shocked when said person reacts accordingly.

Is Bonds guilty?  Yeah, probably.  Do I care?  Nope.  Baseball has a choice in my opinion:

  1.  take down everyone, wipe away an entire era of baseball,
  2. or move on.

You can’t have it both ways, though that seems to be the path they’re willing to take.

So, to you Barry, I say enjoy Cooperstown.  You deserve to be amongst the greats of baseball, for you truly are great.  One of the greatest players (if not THE greatest player) I have ever been privileged to see firsthand.  I salute you, and will always be a fan.
